Discovering my history – Montenegro

To travel is what I aspire to, but when it comes to discovering your own history while traveling it’s when I felt completely settled. The moment of out of physical silence in the crowded city of Kotor kicked energy rush through my body. I felt if I was already here, walking the same paths, listening to the same sound of sea and enjoying the same type of food. Such a special moment.

The colors that lures me to think about past, the friendliness of domestic people connected with picturesque views of Kotor and all Montenegro Bay blown me away!

In Kotor there is an amazing wine bar on the beginning of the old town, make sure to try Zvonko Bogdan’s wine. Fruity notes combined with semi dry taste of cabernet sauvignon influenced by percentage of blaufränkisch and merlot notes it’s what make this wine so special!

When it comes to food don’t forget to try no name dinner. Continue your way down the main street and then on the end of it turn right go a bit further and on the first crossway go right and may the food tasting begins!

Shrimps in cranberry sauce, garlic bread and white wine is what I would suggest you to try if it’s on the daily menu.

The costal city of Perast cherishes small museum where you can see history of Balkan coast. Swords and daggers from Venetians – Turkish fights, ancient paintings and what’s was so thrilling where I saw our family coat of arms live for the first time, since it’s a museum property. My family mostly lived on Sv.Stefan and Perast, where they had their army of soliders and did their activities when not traveling for battlefields and political meetings.

5 min boat ride from Perast will take you to two small islands one artificial island made by bulwark and rocks, sinking the old pirate ships and other natural. It’s where two small churches take place. Our Lady of the Rocks and St. Georges. Our Lady of Rocks an artificial island with a church that was created by a Croat local seamen who kept ancient oath after findimg the icon of Madonna and Child.

The second island is natural island empowered by church of St. Georges. The Island contains Saint George Benedictine monastrey from the 12th century and the old graveyard for the old nobility from Perast, including my ancestors. During the earthquake the church was ruined and it was my ancestor Miha Grubac who reconstruceted whole church, finding all the history notes through my family and visiting those locations was so fullfiling. My dad’s aunt is researching archive and writing the whole family tree book which I can’t wait for since it will show all the history and be avaliable in print.

This journey I will cherish forever.

Why choose cooking for friends

Why I love cooking for friends so much?

I love it for many things. Reason on is that look friends give eachother while enjoying a nice meal, the moment when all of our worries get lost and we embrace new tastes and fun. To provide someone a get away is the number one thing. Another reason would be that I enjoy cooking and baking. Ever since I was a little boy, I had passion for making goods in my grandmothers kitchen. I have two of grandmothers one of which is really flagmatic and another one who like to keep everything in order every second of her life. Both of them had a role in my a la chef education. Flagmatic one brought easiness and filtration to the kitchen. What makes a good ‘chef’ is that you need to know how to flirt with ingredients. Most of the time I’m not following cookbooks, I follow only my heart and guts. If my heart tells me to bring a new ingredient that isn’t on the list or put larger amount of it – I do it. But as all things in life, cooking needs a help of a ruler as well. Some of the things you really need to pay attantion of. For example, try not to play with the main ingredients such as flour, baking powder and oil if you are beginner. Otherwise you may end up with killer muffins.

Cooking and baking should be extremly fun, so gear up with some ingredients find a nice recipe and play around! Try flirting with lemon, honey, fruits, putting and mixing unusual flavors together. It may not taste as amazing as you thought it would, but it will always be eatable!

After you learn being flirty within your kitchen area (I’m not encouraging sex on the counter. Flirt with your food at first. It may lead you there after all.)  start bringing your friends over and show them how you flirt! The food never tastes as good as when you put all of your friends in one room and you all dip inside. Bring a bottle of a nice red wine to close the deal and enjoy the night with loved ones!

So here are some tips for your first summer hosting!

Tip No.1 Use flowers!

Use as much as flowers and plants as you can get, it will make ton of a difference! It’s so much more lively to eat next to nature. Or even better, make your dinner out in open!

Tip No.2 Do tryouts!

Try prepearing your food at least once before prepearing it for others, if nothing it will make you feel more confident in your cooking skillis!

Tip No.3 Use fruit!

Summer is just perfect for using and experimenting with all kind of fruits! Make mango sorbet or raspberry pie – my all time favs!

Tip No.4 Make a dress code!

It’s always an optional but it will give your party a different feel, and even if your guests will freak out at first at not having anything to wear they will love it at the long run. Dressing differently than everyday basis makes them run away from reality even more!

Tip No.5 Take photos!

Take lot’s of photos and use #VonGruMadeMeDoIt to get featured on Cooking with von Grü and me to praise your work!

Wish you a good luck!

Chanel SPA review and favorite bath products

When it comes to the favorite spa experiences besides my home sweet home, I have few places dear to my heart. There is nothing better than a bathing experience of your life, trust me!

When I first came to Chanel SPA in Paris hotel Ritz, I was amazed by its interior. Whiteness symbolizing purifying of your body and mind while you are treated with thoroughly designed products. The pool area is vivid with the texture of old aristocratic interior and reminds of an open arena polished with glossy, glass note.

That very Saturday was giving all the signs of busyness. Motorcycle and car sounds followed with the heavy smell of dust and hot asphalt ruling the air. Or was it that I was just sick and tired of city vibe? Maybe.

I realized it was ages since the last time I pampered myself, so I called and arranged myself a spa moment. Giving the fact it was a Saturday I was free for the whole day except the prior date that I set up with my old friend Chyn from NYC.

“I was about to say where the hell are you but then I realized oh here comes the Brad Goreski!” said Chyn referring to my purple-blue head to toe plaid suit. Brad Goreski was the stylist Rachel Zoe’s assistant in the Rachel Zoe Project who was famous for his dandy style I was rocking at the time, now I’m more of Jeremiah Brent. (Assistant that came after Brad)

“Oh, here comes the NYC glam squad, consisting of… Well just you since the bitch is here to rule.” making a joke and just laughing and hugging.

We were standing in front of Angelina Cafe near Luxemburg park in 6th since the main one was just too crowded during Saturdays. For lemon pie and hot chocolate I always choose Angelina over Laduree. You can even get some of the hot chocolate for take away packed in the glass jars when you get nostalgic for Paris. Like I do.

“Everything goes so slow in this country. I just can’t. I wanna die in Paris if the death will be as slow as my latte is.”

After settling down and finding a table Chyn started with her French frustrations which made me a bit uneased because I’m not the type of person who goes after someone while having a delightful time in their cafe. So I just turned the topic and talked her into good sides of French culture even though I understood what she was going through and it is true that cultural differences can put you down for a long run. There are always differences and nothing is perfect, so even if something doesn’t work out as you imagined just give it some time and stick with an open mind because everything works better if you stay chilled. I love all of the cultures and how they influence the world, it feels amazing when you just go with the wind.

“Did you heard? They discounted Bey’s concert it’s happening in a week at Stade de France.” I dropped the maj line.

“OMG. Let’s go! Like.. Formation your ass up the stadion.”

“Let’s plan it, we might if I’ll be free from work! You know I’m team Bey all the way. After KKW. Sorry, not sorry.”

Afer a get-together it was time for my spa time! I took Uber to Colonne Vendome to hit Louis Vuitton and buy some books I saw earlier since it was next to the Ritz. After getting the books, I was walking towards Chanel SPA in Ritz, and all of the sudden I enjoyed the smokey smell of the streets and its busyness. Hmm. It’s so funny how spoiled we people are.

Entering Ritz I was escorted to Chanel SPA area where I have been greeted once again and assigned to a person who will be helping me find suitable treatments designed specially for my body and mind cleanses.

Angelica, my therapist for the day, started explaining to me how each treatment in Chanel SPA is a timeless experience, an energetic renaissance. A holistic approach that awakens all the senses following natural biorhythm to induce deep relaxation.

“Treatments we are doing in our SPA, are combining our retail skin care line of Sublimage, Hydra Beauty, Le Lift, Le Blanc and others. They are specially designed either for woman or man, but you have the ability to combine them depending upon your needs.” Angelica said with such a peaceful tone putting me to experience the holistic side of Chanel SPA already.

“Oh, gosh Angelica. It all sounds really wonderful, I don’t have any extra special needs. I went through the crazy stressful day and Haute Couture week so I just want to feel peaceful and relaxed again.”

“Okay, I understand you completely, if you feel a bit fatigue out of stress you went through we can start with ‘Le Grand Soin’ multi-sensory voyage with immediate and lastingly visible results. I advise you our special treatment for men called ‘Le Temps Revilisant’ which will boost you with radiance! After we can continue with our body treatments to finish moment of indulgence for your body and spirit.”

“I’m all in! Kidnap me for a month if you wish and I won’t call the police!”

‘Le Grand Soin’ lasted for two and a half hours. Angelica was prepping my face with finest creams and oils while massaging it following holistic approach hitting the stress spots. Afterward, she put a sheet mask filled with micro agents to firm my skin and make it young again. (15 is the age my skin stopped aging. lol) After she finished with the face, Angelica started massaging my body with one of the 5 Chanel essential oils made specially for and available only at Chanel SPA at Ritz. The oriental smell puts you in the nature of India and Africa making your body reunited with nature again. I died and went to heaven. Literally.

After the whole experience ended I went to take a swim and believe me, that night, I slept like a baby and my skin felt like ones as well.

But even when it comes to my own home sweet home DIY rituals, there is nothing as good as hot bath experience followed with face masks and oils. These are some of my favorite bathing and home spa products:

1.Diptyque candles

MiniCandles

Since nothing says relaxation like candles, and no one speaks it better than Diptyque.

2. Jo Malone lime basil and mandarin bath oil

Peppery basil and aromatic white thyme bring an unexpected twist to the scent of limes on a Caribbean breeze. Delicious!

3. Philosophy lemon custard shower gel, shampoo, and bubble bath

Its multipurpose power is so fab. When you’re not bathing in it, you can repurpose the conditioning cleanser as shampoo and body wash. And the smell. Did I not said Angelina’s lemon tart is my honey? This smells like my honey!

$18; amazon.com

4. Rituals bath foam

For a super chill bathing experience, combine warm water with this nourishing foam infused with naturally calming White Lotus fragrance.

$19; rituals.com

5. Hask Keratin Protein Deep Conditioner

2280588

When I had longer hair I used to put some conditioner or mask before popping in the bath since the hot fumes going out of your bathtub are making mask ingredients go deep in your hair locks. And this one was my favorite! Even when my hair was tortured with bleach and felt rubbery, this baby made her look like million bucks! Recommend!

Hemingway bar and bistro recension

Driving around heated Zagreb with grandmother, we started thinking only about food. You see my grandmother is a foodie granny, she made me experiment with food since I was a little boy. Snails and frogs were level 1.

“I will die of this heat, turn around and let’s do the first bistro we see.” The grandmother said through rapid movements of old newspaper.

“Are you sure you are even hungry,” I asked even though I knew what she will say next.

“but wait, I know… There is always enough time for food since time is a luxury and food is gold.” quoting it at the same time.

We went for Hemingway since it was closest from the parking space. (Love the reasoning)

Upon our arrival, we didn’t have to go through menus for too long since we ordered impulsively as we choose the place to eat. I’m not a soup type of guy but she choose root soup while for the main dish I went for fish filet and her for a duck.

Fish filet was extremely tender and the notes of asparagus suited it really gently. The notes of rose from Cro valleys influenced the taste reaching refreshing notes perfect for extreme summer heats.

The duck was soft while fried polenta was giving it amazing pop of sweetness.

As we finished our meal discussing old memories that this random dinner date remind us of, we agreed how sometimes spontaneouse choices are the best ones.
